XML sitemap best practices

Reference sitemap in robots.txt. Add `Sitemap: https://example.com/sitemap.xml` so crawlers discover your index file without guessing the path.

Use absolute loc URLs. Every entry should use a full https URL — relative paths break parsers and confuse search engines.

Keep lastmod accurate. Update lastmod when content changes materially — stale dates reduce crawl priority signals.

Split large sites with sitemap indexes. Use a sitemap index pointing to section sitemaps when you have thousands of URLs — stay within size limits per file.

Pair with a GEO site audit. A valid sitemap helps discovery; Site Audit checks whether your homepage is technically and structurally GEO-ready.

XML Sitemap Checker FAQ

Everything you need to know about gptmelo.com. Can't find an answer? Contact us.

What is an XML sitemap checker?

It fetches your sitemap (or sitemap index), parses URL entries, and flags structural problems — unreachable files, invalid XML, missing robots.txt references — with HTTP status on a sample of URLs.

How is this different from Site Audit?

Site Audit scores your brand homepage across six GEO pillars including whether /sitemap.xml is reachable. This tool specializes in parsing sitemap XML, listing URLs, and spotting structural issues across the full file.

Do you support sitemap index files?

Yes. If you submit a sitemap index, we fetch child sitemaps (up to preview limits) and merge URL entries into one report.

Do you check every URL in the sitemap?

The free preview checks HTTP status on the first 50 URLs shown in the table. gptmelo does not bulk-validate every loc beyond preview limits. Sign in to run Site Audit on your brand homepage — it includes a sitemap reachability check plus technical, schema, and content rules.

Do I need an account to see results?

No. Domain and sitemap URL checks preview in this browser session without a signup wall. Sign in when you want saved site audits and workspace tools.
